Welcome to Alder Class Blog
This half term the children have done lots of exciting activities.
We had a special Science workshop where they had fun building more electrical circuits.
The children also enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day .
They had great fun baking biscuits and everyone was very pleased at how they turned out.
In English, we have been reading Little Badman - which the children really enjoy.
Alder class have also published there own chapter of the book.
In maths, we have been working on fractions and learning how about mixed numbers and finding fractions of amounts.
The class have been very interested and engaged in our Fairtrade topic work in geography and we finished the topic with a great debate on fair trade.
Spring 2 Term
Welcome back to Alder Class blog. I hope you all had a good half term break.
Here are some of the things the children have been learning about since the last blog.
In English ,the children all produced some great explanation texts on the life cycle of a butter fly.
This half term they will be writing their own narrative story texts.
In geography ,the children have been really engaged in learning about global trade. They have researched and learned about the major UK export and import trade and how fair trade works to help producers and suppliers around the world.
In science, the children are learning about living things and their habitats.
They really enjoyed the visit by members of the Ruxley Beekeeper Society and learned all about bees and how they can be kept in beehives. The children got to investigate beehives, honey combs and taste some honey.
In designing and technology, the children have started work on a project designing and making packaging for different consumable products.

Alder Class
Welcome to the Alder Class blog.
In this half term, the children have been on two class trips , to the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.
At the National Portrait Gallery, the children enjoyed exploring the different artworks and especially enjoyed the David Hockney exhibition .
At the British Museum, the children were very excited to find out more about the ancient Egyptian civilisation exploring the vast collection of ancient Egyptian historical artefacts.
On both trips the children in Alder Class were a credit to Birkbeck School and their behaviour was excellent.
In Design Technology, the children are having a lot of fun continuing to construct their model pavilion structures.
In maths the children have been working on calculating the area of rectilinear shapes and continuing to develop their mental recall of multiplication and division facts.
In writing, the children have been working very hard on on editing and publishing their stories base on a short film La Luna.- photos to follow.

The children in Alder Class have been working hard with their learning and again their effort and motivation for learning is commendable.
In maths, the children have been working on securing their understanding of multiplication and their mental recall of key multiplication facts. They have been working on using multiplication to work out related division across the times tables and solving one and two step problems using these operations.
In English, the children have been learning about and researching Tutankhamun and the discovery of his famous tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922. They have been planning their own reports about Tutankhamun and the treasures and artefacts discovered in his tomb.
In science, the children have continued learning about electricity making and investigating different electrical circuits. This week, they have been learning about positive and negative electrical charges. They had great fun investigating how to create static electricity using balloons and finding out how negatively charged objects attract positively charge objects.
In Design Technology, the class investigated what shapes provided the most secure and stable structures in preparation for designing and making their own structures in the next few week.
In history ,the children have continued learning about the ancient Egyptian civilisation and the sources of evidence which provide information about the ancient Egyptian way of life, culture and religious beliefs. This week, the children were finding out about the artefacts found in Tutankhamun's tomb and explaining what this evidence told us about the life of Tutankhamun.

I would to say well done to all the children in Alder Class for a great half term. The children have all made a super effort with their learning and and it has been lovely to share in their enthusiasm for learning new skills and knowledge.
In reading lessons, we have continued to read a range of text types including narrative stories, poems and information texts and have been focusing on reading with fluency and proficiency.
In writing, the children have very much enjoyed writing their own Cinderella stories. The children have worked on their proof reading and editing skills and have all published a great final draft.
In maths, the children have been working on addition and subtraction of three and four digit numbers using written methods and applying these skills in problem solving.
In science, the children have enjoyed investigating which materials conduct electricity and which are insulators by constructing and testing electrical circuits.
In art, the children have been looking at examples of narrative art and how paintings can tell a story with a focus on how social injustice can be be conveyed in images. The children then produced their own drawings related to portraying social injustice. The have also been studying the paintings of Paul Cezanne and his use of colours and tonality and have started experimenting with colour mixing to create different tones.
In history, the children have continued to learn about ancient Egypt. They have been learning about the jobs people did in ancient Egypt , why the pyramids were built and the Valley of the Kings. Next half term ,we will be learn all about Tutankhamun and visiting the British Museum to find out more about ancient Egypt.

Hi welcome to Alder Class blog. We have had a great start to Year Four the children have all settled in well and are making a terrific effort with all their learning.
In maths, we have been working on place value with numbers up to 10,000 and creating different representations of numbers.
Here are some great examples of the work the children have produces.
In writing, we have been focusing on sentence structure and improving sentences by using different sentence openers, powerful adjectives and similes.
In history, we have been learning about the dynasties that ruled in ancient Egypt and constructing a timeline of these dynasties.
The children brought in some amazing projects they had completed over the summer holidays for our ancient Egyptian topic.

In French the children have been learning how to say different parts of the face and body in French.
As you can see a great start to Year Four in Alder Class.
